The 68-year-old icon performed for more than two hours Sunday night at American Airlines Center during her first tour in eight years.
Before what looked like a virtually sold-out crowd, Tennessee's Anna Mae Bullock rocked 'n' rolled, turned soulful, got the blues and even summoned the heavens during a bit of Tina-style gospel.
The woman looked fabulous in minidresses that show off her lithe legs. She's a force of nature, and time has been kind to her physically and artistically. In a career-spanning set, each song felt new in her capable hands.
The opener, "Steamy Windows," and her signature tune, "What's Love Got to Do With It," among others, proved that every number is an emotional experience. She puts her being into each song.
She also knows how to put on a show that delivers on spectacle without using flash to compensate for lack of artistry. Ms. Turner chews up production.
During "We Don't Need Another Hero" from the 1985 film Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, she was in the classic costume for her role as Aunty Entity. With dancers in appropriate get-up, she sang beneath an arborlike steel contraption.
For "Goldeneye," it was all about Bond, James Bond. She emerged from a lighted ring suspended above the main stage, and the dancers were decked out in gold trench coats.
The eye candy was wonderful. But she doesn't need it. She was fiery during "What You Get Is What You See," sultry during "Private Dancer," explosive during "Undercover Agent for the Blues," electric during the Rolling Stones' "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and fearless during "Nutbush City Limits." She sang that one from a crane extended over the audience.
Watching Tina Turner perform is akin to witnessing entertainment royalty. She is simply fabulous.

Tina Turner is to play four concerts in the UK - eight years after announcing her retirement from touring.

The Grammy Award-winning singer played a farewell world tour in 2000 that was supposed to mark the end of her career as a live performer.
But Turner, 68, revealed earlier this month that she planned a comeback tour of the US, and will now also perform in London and Manchester in March 2009.
Tickets for the UK dates are due to go on sale on 28 May.
Turner said her appearance with Beyonce at this year's Grammy Awards sparked an interest in taking to the road again.
She said: "After performing with Beyonce at the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, the response was overwhelming.
"Everywhere I went people were asking me when I was going back on tour. So after a lot of thought and planning we announced an American tour.
"Now Europe beckons and I don't want to let down all my loyal fans over there. See you in the New Year."
Turner's new show will feature songs spanning her entire career, organisers said.
Her set will include hits from River Deep Mountain High and Proud Mary, to What's Love Got to Do With It and The Best.
Turner's tour in 2000 saw the singer perform in front of 120,000 fans during two Wembley Stadium dates.
Veteran singer Tina Turner has revealed plans to tour the US, despite announcing her retirement from performing on the road eight years ago.
The 68-year-old pop legend told TV host Oprah Winfrey the tour would kick off in October in Kansas City.
In 2000 the Grammy-winning singer played a farewell world tour that was supposed to mark the end of her career as a live performer.
Tickets for the tour are due to go on sale on 12 May.
Turner announced her retirement plans during the first concert of her world tour in Zurich.
At the time her spokesman said she was bowing out because "she wants to go out at the top."
Best known for hits such as Simply The Best and What's Love Got To Do With It?, she rose to prominence in the mid-1960s with husband Ike, who died last year.
Their violent relationship, which featured in a film about her life, caused her to leave him in 1975.
Since then she achieved commercial success in both the UK and US
